Our gear has changed a bit since we started making videos and where we have upgraded, I’ve mentioned why.

Cameras

So much can be said for our compact, reliable, waterproof, die-hard GoPro Hero 6. I (Sarah) got this GoPro as a birthday present all the way back in 2018 when our channel wasn’t even an idea yet. When we started our channel, this GoPro was one of two cameras we used, and it quickly turned into our main camera. Turns out we used this GoPro for almost all of our filming up until a very recent upgrade which we are VERY excited about.

The other camera we started out filming on was a Canon SX60HS. We bought this camera second hand and one of the main features that we enjoyed was the incredible zoom. For just starting out this camera worked well for us, but we haven’t picked it up again since we got our new upgrade because there is just no comparison.

Now for the upgrade! We knew we needed & really wanted to upgrade our camera so Marek spent months researching and looking for a camera that would fit all our requirements such as filming in low light, great quality footage, audio quality, run-and-gun (basically whip it out your pocket and film), etc.

Finally, after months of searching we found the Sony ZV-1. It was a huge upgrade for us, and we are so excited about this new level of quality we are now able to bring to our content. We’ve been filming with this camera for a couple of weeks now and highly recommend investing in this camera if you are interested in making videos. This camera only has one downfall, the battery life isn’t very long. Luckily, we’ve found a great solution for it, extra batteries that come with their own charger and a fantastic little camera bag that we use to carry the extra batteries as well as the camera when we are out exploring.

Drone

Our drone really adds something special to our videos. We just love the different perspective it brings and the way it helps us capture our surroundings in the best way possible.

We started out using the DJI Spark which worked well for us up until we had a mishap and crashed it whilst staying at a workaway in the French Alps. To say that was a sad day would be the understatement of the year, but we were lucky enough to upgrade (with help from our loved ones and biggest supporters) to the Mavic Mini and it was a huge upgrade.

We bought the Mavic Mini Fly More Combo which comes with a number of extra goodies along with the drone, including a sleek box to keep all the essentials together. This makes it ideal for fitting into our luggage on top of the fact that it is a fantastic drone overall.

Audio

Now for some of the smaller details. Audio. We have tried a number of options when it comes to audio so I guess you could call us seasoned audiographers 😂 Just kidding we are by no means professionals, but we have tried quite a few audio options and we seem to have found the one that works best for us. Initially we invested in a shotgun microphone (Takstar SGC-598) which worked well for us in the beginning and in terms of starting out, it’s a good quality budget friendly microphone.

Then we tried lapel microphones which worked very well in terms of sound quality but less so for ease of recording. Each time we wanted to record something we would have to plug our microphones into our phones, press record on our phones, then press record on our camera, and then clap to sync all the audios and only then could we actually start recording. Lapel microphones are a great option if you’ll be far away from the camera when recording and you still want great audio, but we are hardly ever far from the camera, so all the effort didn’t quite make sense. These lapel microphones were great quality at the best price so if you are looking for lapels these are a great option. PS these are also a great option if you are a bit shy, you then don’t have to speak as loudly when recording in public. 😉

And finally, the audio option we are using currently is the in-built microphone on our new camera. You know, the camera we can’t stop raving about, yeah that one 😍 but we are on the lookout for a great microphone to invest in and that will certainly be our next upgrade (if you have any suggestions for us please leave us a comment 😉).

Having said all of this, if you are looking to create videos, get into photography, or any other content creation the best camera/equipment you can get to start is what you’ve got in your hand. The biggest obstacle standing in the way for a lot of people is thinking you need to have THE gear to get started. Our advice would be to start with what you’ve got and see how it goes. I think you’ll be amazed at what you can create with what you’ve got.
